In a new series titled the Road to Success, we take a look back at some of the outstanding entries and winners of the Daman Corporate Health and Wellness Awards to help individuals and organisations learn from them and implement some of these winning strategies.
In this feature, we take a closer look at the Dubai Airports and their winning entry for the CSR Employee Engagement of the Year Award at the 2017 awards.
Dubai Airports’ charitable vision
A plane pulling challenge crowned a hugely successful campaign to raise money for the visually impaired.
In terms of creating a headline-grabbing initiative, it is difficult to imagine anything more effective than Dubai’s Airports’ Your Sight, Our Happiness campaign.
The campaign not only supported team building, staff fitness and community outreach, but also raised an impressive AED 1.25 million for the international eye care charity, Orbis.
This money is enough to fund sight-restoring surgery for as many as 40,000 children suffering from cataracts worldwide.
As well as delivering many successful outcomes, the creative approach and enormous success of the campaign won Dubai Airports the Daman Corporate Health and Wellness Award 2017 for CSR Employee Engagement of the Year.
The highlight of the campaign was an event that saw 10 Dubai Airports’ teams compete to pull National Air Cargo’s 747 aircraft the furthest distance.
To carry out the challenge safely, Axa Insurance, Anglo Arabian Healthcare Group and International Modern hospital partnered with Dubai Airports to provide health assessments and warm-up facilities.
Your Sight, Our Happiness also featured a charity luncheon sponsored by Emirates Flight Catering.
The menu for the luncheon included a dessert that had to be eaten by blindfolded diners to raise awareness of the everyday challenges faced by the visually impaired.
Dubai Airport’s employee wellbeing department successfully engages staff in about 24 CSR activities every year.
Reward programmes, health and wellness initiatives and social events have benefitted more than 3,000 company staff, as well as helping stakeholders and the local community.
But despite this impressive pedigree, the Your Sight, Our Happiness campaign impressed the Daman Corporate Health and Wellness Awards judges for the sheer scale of the organisation involved in its delivery.
The team behind the campaign was responsible for coordinating with local authorities, obtaining approvals, sourcing a plane, encouraging participation and securing funds.
“We are very happy with the outcome of the campaign,” said Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths. “It is deeply satisfying to know that the collective efforts and generosity of employees of Dubai Airports and our partners, as well as the support and contribution from corporate entities will help improve the lives of thousands of children by restoring their sight.”
