In a new series titled the Road to Success, we take a look back at some of the outstanding entries and winners of the Daman Corporate Health and Wellness Awards to help individuals and organisations learn from them and implement some of these winning strategies.
In this feature, we take a closer look at the Khidmah LLC and their winning entry for the Health & Safety Initiative of the Year Award at the 2017 awards.
Safeguarding the community
Khidmah meets the challenge to implement health and safety measures in an organisation that provides diverse services across many locations.
Maintaining health and safety is a constant challenge for any organisation, but for Abu Dhabi-based facilities management company Khidmah, the task was even more challenging than usual because of its unique mix of work environments.
With about 2,760 employees across more than 80 facilities, from beaches and retail developments to schools and hotels, Khidmah faced the challenge to having ensure consistent and rigorous health, safety and environmental (HSE) standards across its extensive organisation.
The scale of Khidmah’s initiative to address this challenge impressed the Daman Corporate Health and Wellness Awards judges so much that it was named Health & Safety Initiative of the Year 2017.
To achieve its ambition to improve HSE standards across the entire Khidmah group, the company formed dedicated committees that covered 67 contracts across 502 project locations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Each committee was tasked with providing appropriate training for all staff, which led to IOSH (UK’s Institute of Occupational Health and Safety) training for 66 per cent of property managers and safety instruction for all technical employees. First aid certification is now mandatory for all professional staff.
Khidmah life guards working at seven beaches owned by Dubai Municipality received instruction on first aid and CPR, and completed over 32,000 hours of rescue training.
Other HSE initiatives have included conducting fire drills in 13 managed communities, involving 10,000 commercial and residential units. While an innovative hazard risk reporting mechanism has enabled rapid response to reported hazards and risks leading to safer working and living conditions for stakeholders.
Executives at Khidmah recognised the need to work with other organisations to achieve optimum results.
The company ran a “Beat the Heat” campaign for 1,453 outdoor workers in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health Centre.
Discussions have also been held with Abu Dhabi Police Community Department to prevent incidents, accidents, and crime within their managed communities.
Working together with Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco, Khidmah organised a safety awareness week for the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture.
Games were organised to raise awareness of issues such as ladder safety and safety sign identification, a “Mr Handsome” event promoted the importance of grooming and hygiene, while a balloon race boosted team spirit.
Not content with merely improving HSE standards for its internal stakeholders, Khidmah is keen to use its experiences to benefit the wider community and is providing advice to various regulatory authorities across the region on the development of successful codes of practice.
